The Dental Technicians Registration Board was established under the provisions of the
Dental Technicians Registration Act 1975 to exercise the powers, authorities, duties
and functions necessary to implement the Act.
Dental Technicians are involved in all laboratory aspects of the construction of
removable and fixed appliances to restore function to the human mouth. Although
there have been a number of technological advances in this field, it is still a
craft oriented profession as all such appliances are made largely by hand to a
clinician's prescription.
Training for the profession is presently a two year full time Diploma course at the
Randwick Institute of Technology followed by two years full time work in an approved
dental laboratory or a four year part time course while working full time in an
approved environment. Registration examinations are conducted by the Board and by TAFE.
Dental Prosthetists are technicians who have completed a further two and a half years
of part time study which qualifies them to deal directly with a patient for the
construction of removable prosthetic appliances.
