EDUCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS
Introduction
The NSW Dental Technicians Registration Board is offering
a scholarship to the student who achieves the highest ranking at the
conclusion of the Advanced Diploma of Dental Prosthetics course.
The grant will be equivalent to 25% of the enrolment fee
for the course, presently $7,000, and will be awarded
twice annually at the completion of each intake.
Purpose of Scholarship
To encourage the pursuit of clinical and academic
excellence by students undertaking the Advanced Diploma of Dental
Prosthetics course conducted by NSW TAFE, by providing an incentive for
them to excel in their vocational educational pursuits, thereby enhancing
the standard of care they ultimately provide to the public.
Terms and Conditions
The recipients of the awards will be the students who,
according to TAFE NSW, are assessed as the highest ranked graduates of
their intakes, subject to those individuals having practised as a student
and/or dental technician in New South Wales for a minimum of three
years. In the event that the highest ranked student does not satisfy
the eligibility criteria, the award will be granted to the next highest
ranked eligible student.
Students, whose enrolment fees were paid by a sponsor, eg
an employer, (other than a service company in which the applicant holds
substantial ownership), will not be eligible for the scholarship, unless
that payment was a loan that will be repaid to the employer.
The Board reserves the right to adjudicate on eligibility,
based on the principle that the scholarship is deemed to offset some of
the costs incurred personally by the student in meeting his or her
educational expenses.
Applications
The Board invites applications for
a scholarship from students who will be undertaking the final semester of their
course. Mid-year intake students are required to submit
their application to the Board by 31 May, whilst students expecting to
graduate at the end of the year must lodge their application with the
Board by 30 November.
On an application form available from the Board’s website,
applicants must provide:
- evidence of their enrolment in the course;
- a statement verifying that their course enrolment fee was paid by
themselves;
- a statement from their employer/s verifying three years practice in
New South Wales; (this may include a transcript from TAFE in the Diploma
of Dental Technology for two of those years), and
- their Australian Business Number (ABN), where applicable.
Taxation Implications
If the applicant is NOT registered for GST in the capacity
for which the scholarship is offered, no GST will be payable on the amount
granted. However, where an applicant is NOT registered for GST,
he/she may still be subject to Pay As You Go withholding tax at the rate
of 48.5% UNLESS he/she provides a completed, signed “Statement by
Supplier” form indicating that the payment he/she is to receive is of
a private or domestic nature. Statement by a Supplier forms
are available on request from the Board’s office.
If the applicant is registered for GST in the capacity for
which the scholarship is offered, then the obligations he/she enters into
will be considered a taxable supply. This means that the recipient
will have to pay GST on the scholarship monies he/she receives.
Where this is the case, the scholarship will be increased to cover the GST
liability. However, the Board will require such scholarship
recipients to provide it with a tax invoice or enter into an agreement for
the Board to issue a recipient created tax invoice. Provided the
applicant has advised the Board of their ABN, there is no requirement for
withholding tax to be deducted from their payment.
